The WKZ Birth Center
At the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital Birth Centre, you receive expert care regarding your pregnancy and delivery. You will give birth under the supervision of your midwife or gynecologist. Should you or your baby require additional care, you have come to the right place. The birth centre is part of an integrated children's hospital. This means that all medical specialists in the field of maternal and child care work together here, under one roof. And all within walking distance of one another. This ensures that we can provide you and your baby with the best care before, during, and after the delivery.

What does the birth center offer?
In the WKZ Birth Centre, all facilities related to pregnancy, childbirth, and childcare have been brought together. The birth centre consists of:
- The outpatient clinic
- The Triage Department
- The Pregnancy Department
- The Delivery Center
- The Maternity Ward
- Neonatology: Medium Care (MC)
- Neonatology: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
At the WKZ Birth Centre, the care for you and your future child takes center stage. We provide tailored care. To achieve this, we collaborate with your own midwife. This allows you to continue attending check-ups at a practice near you. However, if extra care is needed for you or your baby, we can provide it immediately.

Who can come to us?

Do you like the idea of giving birth in the hospital? Then you can come to the WKZ Birth Centre, even without a medical indication. You will then give birth on an 'outpatient' basis and under the supervision of your own midwife. When labor begins, your midwife will contact us to see if there is a place available for you to give birth at the WKZ Birth Centre.
If there is a medical indication to give birth in the hospital, for example because it is known that you or the baby may require additional medical supervision, you can also come to us. In this case, you will give birth under the supervision of one of our clinical midwives or the gynecologist.
Guided tour
The birth center consists of nine delivery rooms and two treatment rooms. A multidisciplinary team of gynecologists, midwives, residents, and nurses works at the birth center, focusing on all care surrounding the delivery.

The WKZ Birth Centre consists of two parts:

We collaborate with various midwifery practices and maternity care organizations in the Utrecht region. This collaboration takes place within our VSV (Midwifery Collaboration) Alliance. Through this partnership, we ensure that care is coordinated. Therefore, you can give birth at the birth center under our supervision or with your own midwife from outside the WKZ.

Healthcare providers

Within the birth center of the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital (WKZ), there are various healthcare providers involved in your treatment. The WKZ is part of the UMC Utrecht. The UMC Utrecht is a teaching hospital, which means that during your treatment you will also come into contact with healthcare professionals in training.
Neonatology
Bringing a healthy child into the world is not a given. The neonatology department at the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital is there for all babies with a difficult start. Children are admitted to the neonatology department (NICU) who require intensive care and/or monitoring (shortly) after birth. This concerns children who were born prematurely (from 24 weeks), have a low birth weight, or need to be observed and/or treated for other reasons.

What is the birth center?
The WKZ Birth Centre consists of two parts:

Who is the birth center for?
Pregnant women can give birth in the WKZ Birth Centre. This can be on an outpatient basis and under the supervision of their own midwife, or, with a medical indication, under the supervision of one of our gynecologists.
What are the options for pain relief during childbirth?
What happens if complications occur during childbirth?
The WKZ Birth Centre has direct access to a team of specialists, including gynecologists, anesthesiologists, and neonatologists. This close collaboration ensures that, if necessary, rapid and adequate intervention can be provided in the event of complications during delivery.
During labor, both the mother and the baby are continuously monitored. This is done using cardiotocography (CTG), in which the baby's heart rate and the mother's contractions are monitored. This continuous monitoring helps detect any potential complications early, so that appropriate measures can be taken immediately.
Who is allowed to be present at the delivery?
Various people may be present during a birth at the request of the pregnant woman. These include the partner, family members or friends, or a doula. Depending on the situation, other healthcare providers may also be present, such as an anesthesiologist, a neonatologist, or a cardiologist.
It is wise to discuss the wishes in advance.
