What makes our Pediatric Intensive Care so special?

Wilhelmina Children's Hospital

Our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is part of the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital. Therefore, all the specialized care a child needs is very close at hand. Construction of our renovated department will begin in 2024. This department is being built according to the latest insights in the field of Pediatric Intensive Care, placing the patient and the family even more at the center.

Children's Heart Center

Our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is part of the Pediatric Heart Center. Together with the pediatric cardiac surgeons and pediatric cardiologists, we form a team with full expertise for patients with a (congenital) heart defect.

Princess Máxima Center

Our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is there for all children at the Princess Máxima Center who require intensive care. The two hospitals are connected via the special rainbow bridge.

Center for home ventilation in children

In addition to acute care, our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit also provides care to children requiring home ventilation, and everything associated with that. Our Center for Home Ventilation in Children is one of the largest centers in the Netherlands.

Artificial Intelligence

Our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence. We do this in collaboration with colleagues from other specialties and with various (inter)national hospitals. In doing so, we are at the forefront of new developments in this field.

About our Pediatric Intensive Care

Our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital is part of the UMC Utrecht. In this specialized department, we focus entirely on the care and treatment of seriously ill children. “Intensive care” means that your child receives the extra care that is needed, in an environment that takes your needs into account.

Our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, which we call the Pelican Department, has 16 to 18 beds. Annually, 1,100 children are admitted to our department. We care for children aged zero to eighteen. Our department is part of the Pediatric Heart Center and is therefore one of the four centers for pediatric cardiac surgery in the Netherlands. The Center for Home Ventilation in Children (CTB) is also part of our department. With this, we serve a regional function for the Central Netherlands.

In this way, we form one team in one place where all knowledge and expertise are bundled.

Admission to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

At our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, children are admitted when they are seriously ill or require intensive monitoring and support. Monitoring involves keeping a very close eye on blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing, for example. By support, we mean that, for instance, a ventilator takes over breathing if a child is no longer able to do so independently. Our work continues 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This allows us to provide the care children need at any time of day.

Children can be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit with the following conditions:

  • Serious infections
  • Breathing problems
  • Heart defects
  • Disorders of the brain and nervous system
  • Oncological problems
  • Trauma care
  • Post-major surgery care

Practical information

Who works in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit?

Working in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is teamwork. That is why you will meet many different people on the Pelikaan ward. We work in a diverse team of doctors and nurses who are specially trained to care for critically ill children. In addition, there is close collaboration with the physiotherapy departments, dieteticsmedical-pedagogical caresocial workpsychology and spiritual support.

The pediatric intensivist

A pediatric intensivist is a pediatrician or anesthesiologist who has further specialized as a pediatric intensivist. As such, the pediatric intensivist has expertise in everything related to treating a patient in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The pediatric intensivist supervises the Intensive Care Unit.

The physician assistant

The physician assistant (PA) in our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is an essential member of the medical team. The PA has completed a Master's degree and possesses extensive medical knowledge and skills. The PA is specifically trained to take over tasks and procedures from the pediatric intensivist. In addition, our PAs actively participate in research and play a crucial role in sharing their expertise through education and training, both within our hospital and externally. In this way, they contribute to continuous improvements in the care of our young patients and the education of future healthcare providers.

The doctor in training

Many doctors in training to become pediatricians or anesthesiologists (also known as residents or physician assistants) work at the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital. As part of their training, they complete a several-month internship in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. They are responsible for the daily operations. You will see these doctors at the bedside every day. The physician assistant is supervised by the pediatric intensivist.

The nurse

The Intensive Care nurses are specially trained pediatric nurses. They work closely with the patient and are trained in recognizing and monitoring children in critical health.

They are, as it were, the directors of the patient and his/her care process; they have a coordinating role in collaborations with specialists and paramedical disciplines. In addition to providing highly complex care, the nurse ensures that parents and the family are involved in the care.

The nurse specialist

The Nurse Practitioner (NS) is a Master's-educated practitioner who is an expert in a specific field. The Nurse Practitioner combines nursing treatments with medical treatments. In addition, they are also involved in research and education. On the Leeuw en Pelikaan wards, the NS, together with the intensivists and resident physicians, are responsible for medical policy, particularly regarding children on chronic ventilation, both inpatient and outpatient.

The intensive care practitioner

The Intensive Care Practitioner works in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit within a specific area of expertise (respiration and ventilation, heart and circulation, kidneys and renal replacement therapy). They can be recognized by their names Ventilation Practitioner (VP), Circulation Practitioner (CP), and Renal Practitioner (RP). Together with the intensivist, the Practitioner determines the treatment plan within their own area of expertise. In addition, they are involved in research and education. An intensive care practitioner combines this role with work as an ICU nurse or nurse practitioner.

The medical-pedagogical care provider

The medical-pedagogical care providers play an essential role in the well-being of patients aged 0 to 18 years. They provide emotional support and appropriate pedagogical interventions to reduce the anxiety and stress of an ICU admission.

The professionals provide age-appropriate distraction during a medical procedure, intervention, or surgery. They understand that admission to the pediatric ICU can be stressful. Through a creative approach and attention to the individual needs of the child, they also try to offer distraction, allowing a child to briefly escape the medical procedures. Additionally, the medical-pedagogical care providers strive not only to guide the sick child but also to support siblings. Furthermore, the professionals offer not only pedagogical guidance in a medical setting but also support in the event of your child's passing. The professionals are committed to providing emotional support and helping to create cherished memories.

Collaboration with other specialties

For the best treatment, we work closely with other specialties. At the WKZ, all surgical and pediatric specialties are available twenty-four hours a day. In addition to general pediatric conditions, our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit specializes in the care of children with cancer. We are connected to the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology via a special walkway, the Rainbow Bridge. This means it is only a five-minute walk from the ward at the Princess Máxima Center to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the WKZ. This is extremely important, because the operating rooms are also located at the WKZ.

We also specialize in treating children with heart defects. Mothers expecting a baby with a congenital heart defect do so at our facility. Birth center, less than a hundred meters from the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Also all other important departments for your child, such as the operating rooms, the cardiac catheterization rooms and the department Pediatric Cardiology (Lion department) are located close to each other. Our pediatric cardiac surgeons, pediatric cardiologists, and pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists, who are specially trained to treat children, work in these departments. Therefore, these doctors can often be found in our department as well.

Children's ambulance

Sometimes, seriously ill children are transferred to our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit from another hospital that does not have an intensive care unit. Our team handles these transports. We have an ambulance and a stretcher specially designed for children. This allows us to ensure that children requiring intensive care can be safely transported to our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Ronald McDonald House and living room

Sick children feel better with their parents, brothers, and sisters nearby. Parents are better able to sustain their care with a place to rest close to their sick child. The Ronald McDonald House (RMD House) ensures that you, as parents, can stay close to your child. Our department can check for you whether you are eligible for a stay at the RMD House. The nurse will check if a room is available and can register you. You may be placed on a waiting list first. The distance between your home and the hospital, as well as your child's situation, will be taken into account.

The Ronald McDonald House

Escape the hospital atmosphere for a moment in the Ronald McDonald Living Room at the WKZ. Here you will find a quiet spot with various facilities, ideal for taking your mind off things. There is a play area especially for siblings, and parents have the opportunity to shower and express breast milk. Our nurses will be happy to provide you with more information about the opening hours and location of this living room. The opening hours are as follows:

Monday to Friday: 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Saturday and Sunday: 12:00 to 18:00

Scientific research

uitklapper, klik om te openen

At the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, we conduct extensive scientific research. We always do this collaboratively: with colleagues from other specialties, with other (inter)national hospitals, and with patients and parents. We conduct research to improve the lives of critically ill children with congenital heart defects, cancer, and children requiring home ventilation. Because we collect a large amount of (clinical) data in the process, we are increasingly using Artificial Intelligence (AI) for this purpose.

Working at

We are always looking for enthusiastic colleagues. Working in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is characterized by teamwork; no two days are the same. There are various opportunities for career advancement and training within our department and the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital.
