What if my child has a chronic illness? uitklapper, klik om te openen

Infection is generally mild. Children are not or only briefly ill and not seriously ill. Hospitalization is rarely necessary. Contamination is also mild in children with a chronic disease. In children, an infection with the coronavirus can be compared to a bad cold. Children with a chronic illness do not have to adhere to extra measures. If a child has an "emergency plan" for respiratory infections (specific measures during illness), this plan also applies to an infection with the corona virus.

At this moment, there is no special advise to protect adults or children with weakened immune system due to organ or stem cell transplants, HIV, congenital immune disorder (PID), chemo therapy or immunosuppresive therapy. However, we do advice to keep in mind the below hygiene measures:

  • Frequently wash your hands.
  • No shaking hands.
  • Cough and sneeze into your elbow.
  • Use disposable tissues.
  • Do not shake hands.
  • Try to avoid touching your face (eyes, mouth, nose).

What about going to school, daycare or visiting my child (with a chronic illness)? uitklapper, klik om te openen

No extra precautions are necessary for most children. It is in the interests of children to go to school. If you have any doubts about this, ask the attending physician. For the rules regarding visits, please refer to the RIVM site.

There is no need to take extra precautions.

I have / my child has respiratory complaints and/or fever and a lower resistance. What should I do? uitklapper, klik om te openen

Our advice is to take action as you would with any other (respiratory)infection. If necessary, you can contact your treating physician by phone. He/she will discuss the next steps.

When I have / my child has respiratory complaints and/or fever, do I get tested immediately for coronavirus? uitklapper, klik om te openen

There is no reason to test you (soon/directly) for coronavirus. Unless you have a family member that is infected with coronavirus. In that case, the GGD will do contact research.
